Family Access Online Registration Guide for Parents

 

Kindergarten through 5th Grade

Elementary students are assigned to homeroom teachers in the fall of each year.

Beginning May 1st, and prior to August 1st, parents will need to login to Skyward Family Access to verify student information and complete all necessary forms that are required to be completed on an annual basis.

If you are a parent who has never used Skyward Family Access, you will need to Request a Family Access Account

Busing

K-8th grade students residing more than 2.5 miles from their assigned school or in a designated area are eligible for bus service.  Please complete a Request for Student Busing Form to ride the bus.

6th Grade Registration and Course Selection Information

In the Spring of your student’s 5th grade year, Middle School representatives will visit your child’s elementary school.  Students will be given a Course Selection Sheet. Parents will assist students in filling out the form and returning it to your child’s elementary teacher by a date determined by the teacher.

If your student was a participant in band or orchestra, during 5th grade, they have a choice to continue either band or orchestra in the 6th grade.

If your student was not in band or orchestra in 5th grade, they will be put into an exploration class that rotates to different experiences each 9 weeks. Exploratory classes include Art, Technology, & Family and Consumer Science.

Student Schedules will be available in Skyward Family Access and mailed home approximately one week prior to the start of school.

7th and 8th Grade Registration and Course Selection Information

7th Grade

In the Spring of your student’s 6th grade year, Middle School representatives will visit your child’s classroom.  Students will be given a Course Selection Sheet, to choose their classes Parents will be given a copy and if they need to make changes to what their student selected they make the changes, sign it, and return it to the teacher.  If the parent is satisfied with what their child chose they Do Not need to return the copy.

If your student was a participant in band or orchestra, during 6th grade, they have a choice to continue either band or orchestra in the 7th grade.  Alternatively, your child can choose to be in Chorus even if they were not in Chorus the year before.

If your student was not in band or orchestra in 6th grade, or does not choose Chorus, he/she will be put into an exploration class that rotates to different experiences each 9 weeks. Exploratory classes include Art, Technology, & Family and Consumer Science or Exploratory classes which include Literature, Speech, Video Productions, and Wild West. These exploratory classes are all subject to change depending on our staffing.

8th Grade

In the Spring of your student’s 7th grade year, Middle School representatives will visit your child’s classroom.  Students will be given a Course Selection Sheet, to choose their classes, 7th Graders will choose their classes online, they will use their current Skyward logins that they have been using throughout the school year. They will do this in class with teacher assistance. Parents will be given a copy and if they need to make changes to what their student selected they make the changes, sign it, and return it to the teacher  If the parent is satisfied with what their child chose they Do Not need to return the copy.

Students need to choose 2 1/2 Credits from the electives. PE is required for 1/2 a year, or a student may choose to take it for a full year.

Students also need to select 2 Alternate classes from the elective.

Course selection for the following school year will be held by Central and Stevens High Schools during the month of February. Students are asked to select the courses they will take during the next academic year. Course availability is based on student course requests and staffing.

 

Students must give careful consideration to their course planning and should consult with counselors, parent/guardian, and/or teachers. Parent/guardian involvement is recommended prior to the student finalizing their course selection.

Skyward Student Access is used by students to check their own attendance, grades, lunch account status, register for classes and later in the spring schedule classes for the next school year.

 

Adding a Class

At Central and Stevens High Schools, courses may be added on a space available basis during the first three (3) class meet times of a new semester. Students are responsible for making up any schoolwork missed by the late addition of a class to their schedule.

Course Cancelations

Course offerings not having sufficient enrollment after registration will be discontinued for the next school year.

Dropping a Class After Registration

Since staffing is based on students’ course selections, dropping a class after registration will only be done to accommodate extenuating circumstances. Students who are dropped administratively from a course will receive a Withdraw Fail (WF), which is recorded on transcript for the entire course (semester or year), and it will figure into their GPA as a zero. Students who elect to not attend a course and are subsequently dropped will not receive credit and will receive a WF, which will figure into their GPA.

Reading Requirement

Students in grades 9 through 12 who have not met the district’s reading requirement must continue to enroll in reading until the 9.0 grade level reading equivalency is met, unless the IEP Team has determined this course is not required. Students must demonstrate the ninth-grade level of reading proficiency on a district adopted standardized test in order to graduate. Students on Active IEP may be allowed to graduate without this course as determined by the IEP Team. To learn more about this reading requirement, please reference District Code IKF.

Student Classification

Students in the graduating class of 2024 and beyond are classified according to the number of credits earned, not number of years in high school.

Sophomore – minimum of 6 credits and is enrolled in his/her second year of high school, whose high school class is within three years of graduating

Junior – minimum of 12 credits and is enrolled in his/her third year of high school, whose high school class is within two years of graduating

Senior – minimum of 18 credits and is enrolled in his/her fourth year of high school, whose high school class is within one year of graduating

South Dakota High School Activity Association Policy

To be eligible for extracurricular activities, a student has to have passed four classes in the previous semester, and he or she also has to be currently enrolled  in four classes and meet all district requirements as listed in the student handbook under Extra/Co-Curricular Student Activities Guidelines.
