Rapid City Area Schools welcomes Ira Taken Alive as the Director of Climate, Culture, and Indian Education for the 2024-2025 school year!
Ira was born in Rapid City and raised on the South Dakota portion of the Standing Rock Reservation. He is an enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Since graduating from the University of North Dakota, Ira has worked in an array of public service capacities, including the United States Senate, the United States House of Representatives, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, and, most recently, served as the elected Vice Chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Council and as President of the McLaughlin School Board. All throughout his career, being a cheerleader for K-12 education has been a centerpiece. Working with students, parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and school-community stakeholders is a fulfilling and rewarding experience for Ira.
