Weather-Related Decisions for RCAS

With the cold weather settling into our area, we wanted to share how we make weather-related decisions for our district. Below are also the options the district can take if inclement weather occurs. It is important to note that our district covers a large area, and we all know the weather can look different depending on where you reside. The district’s weather team consists of building and grounds, student transportation, operations, and the superintendent’s office to collaborate and make the best decision for the district.

How We Make Weather-Related Decisions

Our administration carefully considers several factors when deciding on school delays or closures due to weather:

  1. On-site Assessment: Buildings and grounds conduct drive-by inspections of schools and district areas to assess local conditions and check building access.
  2. Weather Monitoring: We monitor up-to-date forecasts from the National Weather Service and local news stations to track changing weather patterns.
  3. Extreme Cold Advisory and Warning: According to the National Weather Service, an extreme cold advisory or warning (a new term for windchill warning) may result in a school closure or late start, as exposed skin can freeze in less than 15 minutes. During an extreme cold watch, students must be dressed for the weather and able to safely walk or wait for the bus. Please ensure your child is appropriately dressed.
  4. Road Conditions: Road safety is critical. Our team assesses road conditions locally and in surrounding areas.
  5. Bussing: Colder weather may impact the ability of our buses to start or operate effectively or safely transporting students.
  6. Student and Staff Safety: We prioritize the safety of students and staff when determining whether it’s safe to open schools.

Our Inclement Weather Procedures

  • 2-Hour Late Start: This option gives road crews time to clear snow and improve road safety before the school day begins.
  • Early Release: If weather conditions worsen during the day, an early release may be necessary to ensure students’ safe return home.
  • Forecasted Inclement Weather: If RCAS anticipates closing school the following day, we will notify staff by 1:30 PM and communicate with parents shortly after tto prepare students for a remote learning day.
  • School Closure: While we strive to keep schools open, closures will occur if safety is a concern.

Parental Discretion

We trust you to make the best decision for your family’s safety. Conditions can vary across the district, and if you believe it’s unsafe for your child to travel, you have the right to keep them home. Please get in touch with your student’s school to excuse them for the day.

Staying Informed

We will keep you updated with any weather-related changes. Notifications will be sent via email, text, and voice message, so please ensure your contact information is current in Skyward. Closures will also be noted on rcas.org. We appreciate your understanding as we prioritize the safety of our students and staff.
