RCAS chosen as “mentor school” for implementation of Native American history and culture standards

The South Dakota Department of Education (SD DOE) and the Wolakota Project awarded Rapid City Area Schools as Exlempar for the District’s Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings lessons, which are rooted in Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota culture, history and language. As such the SD DOE has asked RCAS to be a mentor school, in their Bright Spot Initiatives. As a mentor school, RCAS teachers will be working alongside state and tribal schools to provide insight and guidance on our implementation of the OSEUs. Additionally, SD DOE has placed our Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings Lesson Plan Database as an example for the OSEUs for statewide distribution and resources for other districts and teachers.
