Background

The SFSP serves all kids under 18 years breakfast and lunch at no charge.

We know children who miss school breakfast and lunch are more likely to be sick, absent or tardy, disruptive in class, and inattentive. They also score lower on achievement tests. Proper nutrition is essential for learning in school. SFSP provides an opportunity to continue a child’s physical and social development while providing nutritious meals during long vacation periods from school. It helps children return to school ready to learn.

SITE DETAILS

Between our schools and our mobile feeding sites, we will serve meals at a total of 14 locations throughout the 2019 summer. Please check out RCAS Facebook Page for site details.

Partnerships

Meals on Wheels

We will feed all grandparents (60 years +) accompanying a grandchild to our sites a meal at no charge. Donations to Meals on Wheels of $4.25/meal is encouraged.

Feeding South Dakota

We are partnering with Feeding South Dakota and their Summer Back Program to hand out backpacks of non-perishable food to kids at the end of the week at some of our sites. Please visit Feeding South Dakota’s website for more details.

FAQ’S

Can adults eat at our sites?

In an attempt to feed more children in Rapid City, the Nutrition Services department applied for a Food Security Grant through the to feed adults (19-59) accompanying their child(ren) to our sites.

We were awarded $2,125 and the response from our community has been incredible; at the end of the third week of service our grant money is depleted. We intend to apply for more funds next year! Adults can now eat breakfast and lunch for $2.30 and $4.25, respectively.

As always, seniors (60+) accompanying grandchild(ren) to our summer feeding sites, can still receive a meal at no charge throughout the whole summer – thanks to our partnership with Meals on Wheels.

Can I take my meal to go?

The SFSP does not allow grab and go meals. All meals must be eaten on site.

What about inclement weather?

We will serve meals at our schools during inclement weather. Mobile feeding site cancellations will be updated via RCAS Facebook page.
